Matt Goss returning home in style

With the Doc Martens lying in every shoe store again, I can’t help but think back to my first celebrity crush. With his blue jeans, white T-shirts, leather jackets and Doc Martens, Matt Goss caught my eye.

At that time, he was a member of Bros, which for me marked my first experience with a so-called boyband. Needless to say, I wasn’t alone in crushing over his blue eyes and blond hair. There were many Brosettes, who would also wear the same outfits and, beyond a doubt, Matt was their very favorite.

Like many teen boybands, Bros came, conquered and dissolved in a matter of a few years. Altogether, they released three albums, from which the last two I still play once a year. Luke Goss is now a successful actor, usually playing bad guys in Hollywood movies and Matt Goss has managed to get a successful solo career in music, including a long term residency in Las Vegas.

Matt is celebrating his 30th anniversary year, this year, with a big concert back home in London’s Wembley in October. After Bros, he’s truly been on a musical journey that took him everywhere. Not just in places, but also in genres.

His initial attempt with his solo career was in dance music, which has become some kind of reoccurring genre throughout his career and probably the most commercially successful. But his love for ballads, soul and big band show songs also seep through, clearly, throughout his 30 years in the business.

Matt has shown to be a man of style and grace, not just in music, but also in his fashion. No wonder Victoria Beckham has admitted she, too, has been crushing on him for years.

On his way to the Wembley show, Matt’s releasing a surprisingly good new single. It’s called “Gone Too Long” and comes with a video that he, himself, directed. The song is interesting as it shows signs that he is keeping an eye on what’s happening in music and songwriting today. The song is built on variations that are well put together.

Okay, it’s not a song that will blow a Justin Bieber song out of the charts, but compared to some of the other stuff I’ve heard from Matt, this song makes it interesting to see what’s coming next.

The video brings back the jeans and some 80s George Michael moves, with some 90s inspired R&B dancers for company. Much like Matt, the video is all about style. The beautiful shots show everyone at their best. And, yes, I do have to admit, that he is aging really well too.
