Not all that long ago, I considered writing about Daya when she had released ‘Hide Away’, but I think someone else here at Kurrent Music had already beaten me to the punch, so I never wrote the blog.
At that time, I was already triggered by her song, “Sit still, look pretty”, which was released as a teaser for her EP. The song just reminded me of someone who told me to do exactly that, and the discovery that, like Daya, I’m not that kind of girl either. So, I’m absolutely excited about the fact that Daya has released the track as her latest single, even though I wouldn’t probably have taken too much notice of the track if it weren’t for that connection.
Just before the weekend, she uploaded the video for the song and it’s every female artist’s dream. Lots of outfits, lots of looks, who could beat that?! Just one major dress up party. But it is all with a point, though. While the people around her are pulling the strings, she’s raising a very good point that she wants more out of life than to sit down and look pretty.
While I was watching the video, I was wondering if it’s still something girls need to hear right now. I think girls, these days, are very empowered and I think many have dreams to do something with their lives and would probably be offended if someone told them all they had to do was sit down and be pretty. But if she sings it, I guess the message is still needed to be spread.
Daya’s video features a combination of technology and art, which is a combination that, pretty much, always works. Daya is just 17, right now, and when I hear her sing this song, she reminds me a lot of Lorde, but then in a pop version.
It is probably the last single from her EP, because a new album is expected out on October 7th, which you can pre-order on Friday. After a little promotion for the album, she plans to take her debut album on the road on her first ever headlining tour. So, you can say a lot about Daya, but she ain’t sitting still.
