British pop-soul gave birth to the new lion in 2013, when the album Long Way Down roared at the top of the charts all over the Western World. Twenty-six old musician Tom Odell is blessed with incredible voice that can touch the hearts of everyone who likes to indulge in mediocre pop.
His current album is an abundance of big choruses and overly-produced ostentatious sound, so it seems like the singer’s ambitions have downgraded. Despite the flirtatious electronic sound, the album sounds monotonous.
While listening to the album, I couldn’t develop a feeling that I would like to listen to it again. Everything is ok, but that’s it. Not even sensual Somehow, nor energetic Magnetized and opening track Wrong Crowd made me change my mind.
Still, towards the end, I found some tracks that are less untoward. Commercial success is not a question here because all the ingredients are there. Odell sings well, but he should learn that music is not math and it is allergic to predictability. On the other hand, good news is that Odell sold out all of his tour tickets. He is a good guy.
Wrong Crowd is certainly better than couple of last Coldplay albums, and If Chris Martin decided to leave the band, Tom Odell would be a suitable replacement. Come on, Tom, I am cheering for you. Just step up your game.
