Still in her sensitive years, British pop sensation Birdy released her third album this spring, turning out to be her most mature effort yet. It is titled Beautiful Lies.
Since the first track Growing Pains, careful listener will realize that the talented youngster, with melodic songs that are everything but phony, has finally raised herself to the point that is at least one unit above the covers that made her famous. I do not refute that her cover of Bon Iver’s Skinny Love is not the epitome of a great cover. It’s just that I am trying to give Birdy a comparative compliment.
Beautiful Lies proves she is not just another cover singer. This is her first step towards becoming a force to be reckoned with, a diva with recognizable vocal and mellifluous songs. My favorites include Shadow, Keeping Your Head Up, Deep End and Wild Horses. Yes, the album is so good that I couldn’t decide which one stands out the most. I also adore Lost It All, the song that showcases that Birdy can be a powerhouse when she is eager to. If you take a look at the tracklist, you will notice that all of the above mentioned songs are in the first half of the album.
The album does not attenuates in quality after the first part. It flows regularly, but you can notice there is lack of inspiration. Lifted, for example, is a long, repetitive pop nothingness. Although there are some weak spots, the album works as a whole. Bravo, Birdy.
