This week, Shaggy has released a brand new single called “That Love” and everyone is in agreement about it. This could be the track that could make him boombastic, once again.
The song is not innovative, but it’s super catchy (thus commercial). It’s fun. It’s got something nostalgic with the background vocals and it’s just great timing to release this during the summer months when everyone is feeling that love bug more strongly. Altogether, it’s the Shaggy sound as you would expect from him in his prime time, which is why everyone is responding so positively.
Lyrically, it celebrates that moment you feel that love is something you want to last a life time. According to People magazine, Shaggy wrote the song about his wife, and the video of the song also contains a personal touch. The video references to Shaggy’s own military past and is intended to salute the military in general.
For me, the song was reason enough to check out some of the music that I had missed. It turns out this song comes just about a month after his last release, “I Got You”, featuring Jovi Rockwell. That, and some of the other tracks seem to be a little more of a blend between reggae, dancehall and hip hop. Maybe returning to a pop sound is really good move to also put the focus back on the rest. However, you have to get “That Love” out of your head first.
I'm really curious to see how "That Love" will do commercially. It seems to have it all.
