Britney Spears has finally released the very highly anticipated new single, "Make Me". Within minutes after its release, the song was featured on many blog sites and of course I couldn't wait to hear it myself.
Many years ago, Britney, was one of my main inspirations for my own music. This was in a time when she started working with N.E.R.D. In more recent years, I think she's been making interesting choices in her work - singing with an English accent and leaning more towards dance/club music in her pop songs - but none of these things fully worked for me.
When I heard she was returning to a more R&B/Hip Hop influence, I got real curious to find out more. If not only for the simple fact that I thought she would stick to her dance sound.
"Make Me" delivers. The song is sultry and showcases her vocals in a way that reminds you a bit of "Slave 4 You" (and some other album tracks). Glad to see it back. If I had to give reference to a well known song in a somewhat similar sound, I'd say Zayn's "Pillow Talk" is what the song reminds me of the most, but then only in the feel of it.
Britney herself co-wrote the track with BURNS, Joe Janiak and Gerald Gillum. It features G-Eazy, who had already hinted previously that Britney's new material would put her back on the map. I think he's right.
I've said it many times, also in my blogs for Kurrent Music, that Britney had lost a part of her audience along the way. Somehow, after her break down, years ago, the public she reached as a pop princess was not able to connect with her after. At least not in the way they did before. With her working on her body core (abs), recently, she already managed to get more people talking about her. It already looked like she was returning to the Britney at the height of her success and now, she's got the music to back it up. I'm happily signing off on that!
