Leaving some spices out

It’s been THE question for this year, 2016. Will or won’t the Spice Girls reunite? This year, it’s exactly 20 years ago when the world first got spiced up and the 5 girls took over with their girl power.

For months people have been speculating and former members have been hinting at “something” to happen this year, but when the year officially kicked off, it became clear that it may not be the reunion everyone was hoping for.

Victoria Beckham (aka “Posh”) was very quick to respond to all the rumors and make it painfully clear she was done with those days from her past. With her fashion empire, who could blame her?! She has other things to worry about. Besides, according to her own words, she never really played a big part in their live shows anyway as she “asked the crew to always turn her mic off” during Spice Girls’ concerts.

While perhaps, with anyone else, a statement like that could get critics to say “I told you so”, critics were actually very quick to reply wondering why. It was during this time that tracks from her – never released - hip hop album emerged on YouTube and surprised everyone.

Then, very unexpected, Mel C (aka “Sporty”) announced her dropping out of the reunion, only leaving Geri (aka “Ginger”), Emma (“Baby”) and Mel B (“Scary”) to still want to do something for the fans.

And that “something” has now become clear. The three have announced a reunion, which just blends those 3 spices, and they’ve renamed themselves to GEM.

Because of all the uncertainty about this year, a lot of people are already calling it the messiest comeback ever, which is such a shame for a group that had branded themselves so well. I’m glad they’ve found something to give to the fans, because letting this year go by without paying attention to it wouldn't have been right at all, but at the same time, when you leave out some flavours, you change the taste.
