Have you ever seen the musical or movie Annie? Do you remember that scene where the kids are scrubbing the floors and singing a song? Now, keep that song and movie in mind and listen to the new single by Lukas Graham….. It sounds a lot alike, don’t it?
Both songs have a similar piano loop, a similar melody in the chorus and children’s vocals on it, and even the theme sometimes comes closely together.
As much as this could be a reason for me not to like a song, because I do praise originality, I have to say that I actually like the song.
Lukas Graham have a habit of combining a bit of pop, soul and rock together, which places them to fill a gap that Keane has left after they started their hiatus. It’s funny to see that a Danish group has popped up to take that spot, which is the most unexpected twists I’ve seen in a long time. I mean, I don’t really know that many internationally known Danish artists, who also sound so English.
“7 Years”, their previous single, had already caught my attention, but it turned out to be one of those songs that gets old quickly. I’ll be happy when it leaves the heavy rotation on radio stations, because I do need a break from that song, which makes me extra happy a new song has been released now.
In “Mama Said” the band still reminisces of younger years, and sharing life lessons, much like the lyrics of “7 Years”. However, due to the mix of the children singing along and the catchy piano, it’s something I can imagine enjoying a bit longer than “7 years”.
The band is getting mixed reviews, but enjoys a breakthrough many others can only dream about. They have just announced their first headlining tour that will also bring them to perform in clubs and theatres in the States, which will happen in 2017. Yep, they might actually still be around years from now. I wonder if mama told them something about that?
