Keren Ann Turns Pallid

It took five years for Keren Ann to drop the new album titled You’re Gonna Get Love. Her full name is Keren Ann Zeidel and she is a singer songwriter, composer and producer also known as one half of the duo Lady and Bird.

Her debut La Disparation was released in 2002, and I can say that it was her best album yet. Although she didn’t change her style over the years and nourished pop-rock expression with the sparkle of folk, Keren decided to experiment with electronic and pop music. Needless to say, this is what everyone seems to be doing nowadays. It doesn’t mean it is a bad thing, but in this case, it took the charm away.

The album is quotidian, slow and bursts from inertion. Songs sound too similar and there is not one track that is aberrant. This is also means there are no hits on the whole record. Contrary to her better appearances when she insisted on French-pop sound, the new version of Keren is a pallid representation of plethora of pop artists on the scene. By putting pop-rock bass in the spotlight, she positioned herself in the shadow. The only track that stands out is Where Did You Go, a ballade with powerful chorus. The rest of the songs do not even have recognizable choruses. Everything goes by unnoticed.

Easy Money is the only mildly upbeat track, but her vocal sounds irritating. Falsetto is exaggerated. My Man Is Wanted But I Ain’t Gonna Turn Him In has the most potential and maybe she needs to go in this direction on her future craft.

Keren Ann will never reach above the level of her debut. You’Re Gonna Get Love is a boring album with banal lyrics and weak vocal. Sorry about it.
