This might come as a surprise, but RuPaul is my spiritual guru. Two nights ago, 8th season of his show RuPauls Drag Race ended and I have realized that I never shared my thoughts on kurrentmusik about this amazing individual. In order to do him justice, I will review my favorite RuPaul’s album titled Born Naked.

RuPaul is not just a drag queen. He is an epitome of self-love and optimism wrapped up in inclination towards self-actualization. Since he is all about mocking identity, his music might come as trashy. To be honest, his songs are kind of trashy, but lyrics are not that naïve as they appear. Upheaving traditional gender roles and stimulating self-empowerment through music is RuPaul’s forte. On Born Naked, his strengths shimmer, lurking behind the bright glory of the ultimate camp.

The album opener Freaky Money sounds like a parody of Beyonce’s song. RuPaul definitely knows how to make a statement about current trends and people’s obsession with themselves. He also knows how to make you shake your booty to his parody.

Kiss me like you miss me Hump me like you hate me Shoot a movie on my face Take another picture Put it on my Insta Common give me another taste

The biggest hit from the album Sissy That Walk serves as I Will Survive of 2010s. It is a typical RuPaul song - infectious beat and empowering diva attitude that flourishes in every verse.

Pick myself up, turn the world on its head Don't forget what, don't forget what my momma said People talking (ish), since the beginning of time Unless they paying your bills, pay them bitches no mind

Sissy That Walk is more than just a track for the gym. Rupaul is tentative to motivate you to move forward and always be yourself on the way.

And If I fly or if I fall Least I can say I gave it all And If I fly or if I fall I'm on my way, I'm on my way

Can I Get An Amen features Marta Walsh and it is an ode to the main catchphrase from his show. Once again, he amplifies the importance of self love by saying: If you can’t love yourself, how the hell are you going to love somebody else.

Although these lyrics might seem banal and hackneyed, sometimes you need to repeat the message in order to truly believe in it. What I like about trash pop music is that it gives you a clear message. When your inner world gets confusing or even paranoid, you need a clear message. That’s what RuPaul does best – reminding you that the most important things in life are simple. You are the idea of yourself you choose to be.  As RuPaul says on the closing track of the album : We are all born naked and the rest is drag.
