Just when you begin to think that Meghan Trainor has got an old musical soul, she surprises you with making things a little more recent with her new single, "No". Most of her debut album refers to a really classic 50s/60s pop sound, in particular due to her harmonies. Her collaboration with Who's Fancy and Ariana Grande, "Boys Like You", already showed a giant leap in time; jumping straight into the 80s. Her new single, which is leading her new album, was released last Friday and jumps even more forward in the nostalgic of previous musical eras.
This time her time machine was set to the late 90s and the genre was set to R&B.
Maybe it’s due to the title, but for some reason the whole style of the song takes me right back to Destiny’s Child, who broke through with their way of saying “No No No”. Meghan’s “No” was dubbed her best song yet, before anyone had even heard it. I definitely think it’s a strong song and, to me, it’s very nice someone’s trying to bring this sound back into today’s pop music. Praise Meghan for that!
The thing with Meghan though, is that “All About That Bass” was also a very strong song, and to be frank, I’m more about that bass than about saying no. I just find it slightly catchier, even though the hook in “No” is also simple and you do still remember it a day later. It’s just, I was still singing “All About That Bass” straight through to tomorrow, when I heard it the first time around. It didn’t leave my mind at all.
Needless to say though, I love Meghan’s music. I think she comes up with great angles for her lyrics, which I can so appreciate. It's clear she also loves her harmonies, which is something I have in common with her. It’s undoubtedly making its way onto her second album.
I can't wait to hear more of her work. Meghan has been dropping little snippets of new material on social media, whilst recording it. She’s got an incredible feel for catchy harmonies and great hooks and I think she’s one of the most interesting pop stars around right now. And more importantly, she comes across as if she’s incredible down to earth and has stayed pretty normal throughout her amazing career.
Can’t wait to continue my journey on her musical time machine.
