Kerli, a celebrated pop star from Estonia, just dropped the video of her much awaited single “Feral Heart” – and here is my first impression analysis of it!
Okay, the absolute first thought that crosses my mind the moment I click on the play button is – “Hell, that’s a gorgeous video!” Right from the get go, the video is a trip into surrealism. Shot in the forests of Estonia, the middle earth vibe is evident in it and the ambient nature of the song just adds to the whole experience of it. It also gives off the vibe of a gorgeously made live action of some fantasy anime or a spin off from the Lord of the Rings series.
After, I get over the brilliant production value of the video, the songs takes me in! “Feral Hearts” is a glorious electro pop song that takes a dip into creating an ambient and surreal atmosphere. It takes you deep within it. There is a mystery and a longing in the haunting melody.
Kerli’s voice is mesmerizing. It is a perfect balance of husk and warmth. It reminds me of an early Ellie Goulding, or Ellie Goulding in her cover songs. If you haven’t heard Ellie Goulding’s cover offerings, you might hardly have an idea of what I am talking about. But, IMHO, I think her covers preserve a lot of raw beauty of her early days that is somehow missing in her original music after the taste of commercial success. However, that is for another day, and I might actually do a separate post on it.
Coming back to Kerli, she has been on my radar but somehow, I haven’t heard much from her. “Feral Hearts” definitely encourages me to go back and listen to her previous work. It also inspires me to dabble in Estonian pop (which is on my bucket list now). The upcoming album on which this song features is supposed to be her first independent album and that sounds interesting to me – since, it’s the other way round for most other artists who are start out as independent and then join camp with labels after their initial success. Kerli’s graph is indeed intriguing and I’d love to find out what impact it has on her music. Maybe, I’ll be back with a post on that too, soon after the new album releases. For now, we can revel in the goodness of this breath taking video a little longer, right?
Help out Kerli with her music on her PledgeMusic campaign.
