Die Antwoord are a bit like that horse pill you had to swallow as a child to get rid of a massive sinus infection or some other serious illness. However, the older I've gotten Die Antwoord have not only grown into my musical taste but an immense respect has developed out of that as well. With 'Ugly Boy' the prime focus is Yolandi's vocals adding to the sweet/little girl visage about how the ugly boys are the only one's who basically end up crazy about her.
The 'Ugly Boy' music video is a piece of real artwork all on its own. Yolandi is seen with numerous well-known men, Jack Black, Marilyn Manson, and Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. And Ninja is seen with Cara Delevingne and even a cameo from Dita Von Teese.
Yolandi is shown singing and changing from various characters associated with the man she is currently standing next to. For instance, when Yolandi and Ninja are shown they are clad in black, with black contacts, furniture and even Yolandi dons a pair of black angel wings. Standing next to Flea, Yolandi ends up wearing an identical outfit.
'Ugly Boy' is vastly different from their other tracks, which consist more of a rave beat while this song is tuned on a slower rhythm. Yet, 'Ugly Boy' shows a critical versatile change between the duo. The beat is smooth and even somewhat tranquil against the backdrop of lyrics composed by Yolandi. Almost as if Die Antwoord crafted the track in such a way to show the audience the suggestion of what Yolandi is presenting to the crowd.
"Ooh I love my ugly boy. So rough and tough. Don't care about anything but me. Yes I just love him cause he's so crazy. Just crazy about me"
Does this show how we mold ourselves to the person we are with or a slight manipulation on love when to comes to a pair where one is slightly more beautiful?
