COVERLAND Vol.23: Loše vino

“Loše vino” (Bad Wine) is one of the best songs ever written by Goran Bregović, the guitarist and principal leader of Bijelo Dugme. It is also one of the most popular ballads on the ex-Yugoslavian music scene, with lyrics written by Arsen Dedić. The interesting thing is that the song was originally written for and recorded by Zdravko Čolić, another mega-popular pop star from the region. The version was recorded for his first solo album “Ti i ja” (You and I), released in 1975 by Jugoton. The song was a hit, but Bregović obviously felt that the arrangement and interpretation did not achieve the song’s full potential. A year later, he re-arranged the tune and recorded it with Bijelo Dugme’s singer Željko Bebek for the band’s third studio album “Eto! Baš hoću!” (There! I Will!) released in December 1976. Bebek gave the song a bluesier feeling, singing it with more poignancy and a bit of a darker note. That gave a spin on the lyrics, which sounded much more sincere in his interpretation but it also elevated the melody to another perspective, eliminating its pop-feel from Čolić’s original version. Although some would argue, Dugme’s rendition of the song became a classic and it’s still associated with the band rather than with Zdravko Čolić. "Loše vino" was polled in 2006 as the 34th on B92 Top 100 Yugoslav songs list. The album “Eto! Baš hoću!” is also considered one of the best records on the ex-Yugoslavian scene, pronounced the 36th on the list of 100 greatest Yugoslav albums published by Croatian edition of Rolling Stone and the 31st on the list of 100 greatest Yugoslav rock and pop albums in the 2015 book “YU 100: najbolji albumi jugoslovenske rok i pop muzike” (YU 100: The Best Albums of Yugoslav Pop and Rock Music).
