Wonk Unit: Promo Materials Are Definition Of 21st Century Punk

When my friend from England told me how I need to check out Wonk Unit, they have become my favorite band. The sense of humor they bring to the table is undeniable. There is something about them that brings Guy Ritchie to mind. The first song on the album, Awful Jeans, made me laugh so hard that I was instantly hooked.

You’ve gone too far with your awful jeans

Get away from me, bringing shame upon your family

This isn’t 1943 there’s no places on God’s earth for those monstrosities

The kiddies in sweatshops from Primark and Top Shop

Just so you can wear those awful jeans

The vocal is cool, sarcastic and youthful with incredible range. It also delivers emotions when needed. It is definitely one of the most interesting voices in the genre. The music is dynamic, mid-tempo with accentuated drums and string sections on almost each song. The lyrics are aberrant, funny and cerebral, although there are some affectionate moments every now and then. The flaw in lyrical expression is that it tends to be rather curtail and repetitive. My favorites are And You Think This Is Normal and Ode To Summer.

This is not a new band on the scene, as Mr. Splashy represents their fifth album. For some reason, it wasn’t until now that they took a full swing. According to them, promo materials are definition of 21st century punk. Knowing British humor, I am still perplexed whether this is a joke or not. Anyhow, they sound casual, modern and different, but also familiar and approachable. Work Unit is a band that deserves your attention. I am not sure I am going to check out their whole discography, but If I do, and If it’s good, you’ll be first to know.
