Leaving The Listener Behind

Taryn Miller is a young girl who releases her music under the name Your Friend. The album Gumption is her debut album. She likes to experiments with various instruments and maybe that much diversity makes her sound so…uniformed. Spoiler alert: I am not taking about that boring uniformity. This is an interesting combination of incompatible sounds, instrumental sections and strong vocal hovering above. The vocal is what keeps the album united. The author is young but she knows how to play with her limitations. Meditative vocal makes everything sound intimate, even when she sings about braveness. When someone breaks their soul in front of you, you have to be engaged. This is not an album for a passive listener.

Just to put it out there: my favorite tracks are Heathering and Desired Things. Being sincere is a huge bait of modern society, but Your Friend sounds like she is breaking the boundaries with her sincerity. She forces you to think outside of the box. She stimulates you to listen outside of the box. You won’t find a simple chorus solutions here, or mediocre melodies. You will find an experiment. You will be surprised after each song.

Your Friend infatuates you with her music choices. Your mind is thrown from one side of the world to the other side of the otherside. The final result of this turbulence is uniformity I have mentioned at the beginning of this review. Fragmentation disappears. Her voice disappears. All that’s is left is you, staring into the abyss.

Leaving the listener behind is an interesting variable in this music experiment. What’s also interesting is that this girl was into sports her whole life. She wasn’t into music before she heard school’s choir practicing. What I want really want to say is that this girl is unpredictable. Still, she will always be your friend.
