Wrekmeister Harmonies - Light Falls

The relatively well-known Illinois drone/drone metal/psychedelic rock band Wrekmeister Harmonies came out with a new album recently. The seven track album is titled ''Light Falls'' and it packs a fine mixture of drone, drone metal, post-rock, as well as psychedelic rock and noise rock influences. Thus not differing much from earlier J.R. Robinson albums for that matter at least.

The album starts off with the relatively mellow droney and ambient ''Light Falls I: The Mantra'' where the vocals of J.R. Robinson work pretty well too in building up some forward propelling droney motion. ''Light Falls II: The Light Burns Us all'' offers a more clear-cut slow and low repetitive bass line that is accompanied by some post-rock guitars that have an acoustic dimension to them in the beginning as well. The track also reminds Om a fair bit with its rather catchy yet simple doomy bassline repeating through the track and evolving into some gradually increasing transcendant stoner heavyness. ''Light Falls III: Light Sick'' on the other hand dwells in the realm of ambience once again having cast aside the stoner heavyness of the previous track until the second half of the song. The exact same thing can be said about ''The Gathering'' which starts off in an ambient way only to evolve into a rather melodic mixture of stoner and post-rock. ''Where You Have Been My Lovely Son?'' also offers a clear ambient post-rock atmosphere from start to finish, while also packing some acoustic or classical music elements to it. The penultimate ''Some Were Saved Some Drowned'' is perhaps the best track on the entire album with its fine and addictive stoner doom riffage from start to finish that again tends to remind a mixture of Om and post-metal to me. ''My Lovely Son Reprise'' on the other hand has an Americana and Nick Cave feel to it and thus ends the album in a rather contemplative quiet manner.

All in all ''Light Falls'' tends to be a rather solid genre mixing album that boasts two great songs with an Om vibe and some more not so bad songs as well. Thus it is a great album for anyone who is looking for some stoner heavyness with some post-rock and post-metal influences thrown into the mix every now and then.
