Sunnata - Climbing The Colossus

Sunnata are one of the most well-known Polish stoner metal/stoner doom/sludge bands along with the likes of Belzebong. While Sunnata recently released their newest album ''Zorya'', then for me their best album to date is definitely ''Climbing The Colossus''. An album they released back in 2014 and which tends to be somewhat more heavier and memorable than their new album.

What is great about ''Climbing The Colossus'' is that it puts forth a fine mixture of sludgy stoner metal/stoner doom and psychedelic rock, while the vocals have also turned out rather great. This comes best apparent on the second track of this fine album. The track is titled ''Orcan'' and it packs some fine stoner metal with a clear psychedelic rock feel to it as well in parts. ''Asteroid'' is another good track on this album and it packs a fine sludgy stoner metal riff and the vocals work well once more, while the track also has a slight psych dimension too. The fifth track ''Seven'' is another no-nonsense stoner metal track and does a great job in its no-nonsense stoner metal ways. The same can be said about ''Path'', but the difference is that the vocals don't work as well as in previous tracks. Luckily though the track is mostly instrumental, and the instrumental part works well again in its no-nonsense Stoke City style stoner metal/doom ways. ''Stalagmites'' and ''Monolith'' are once more pretty fine instrumentally, but the vocals tend to ruin these tracks for me a bit. Unlike for example in ''Orcan'' where vocals work really well. The almost 10 minute long ''Fomalhaut'' is another great stoner metal/sludge/stoner doom track instrumentally, while the vocals work pretty well too, and it finishes the album off as well as ''Orcan'' had started the album.

All in all ''Climbing The Colossus'' is a pretty good album and it packs a few really good songs, while it also packs quite a few songs that are perhaps a bit average in terms of what the genres of stoner metal or stoner doom have to offer. Nevertheless the overall image of the album is good and tracks like ''Orcan'', ''Asteroid'' and Fomalhaut'' are indeed pretty awesome.
