The Canadian one-man feedback filled blackened psychedelic drone doom/shoegaze band thisquietarmy came out with a new album last year, and what a massive album it ended up being. Thisquietarmy has become known for its feedback filled psychedelic drone doom, with shoegaze, post-rock and krautrock influences. All in all what sums up thisquietarmy's music is that it is simply genre surpassing. His latest album Anthems For Catharsis moves more towards blackened feedback filled post-rock or even post-metal.
Anthems Of Catharsis packs both the distinct slower feedback filled drone doom, and faster black metal influenced trascendental post-rock that comes best apparent in tracks like Purgation/Purification. This track essentially packs some feedback filled guitars that dwell on the borders of post-rock and post-metal, while the drumming could be described as straighforward black metal in parts, while moving into the Nadja'esque drone patterns in the second half of the song. The first track Ruminations however dwells in the distinct earlier drone doom/shoegaze sound of thisquietarmy. From Darkness Redux also follows the roughly same pattern of post-rockish drones on top of some repetitive slow drum patterns. Accomodator again moves more towards the black metal realm, with some faster drumming and feedback filled eerie black metal soundscapes, whereas Masquerade and Closure dwell in the distinct drone doomish shoegaze realm distinct to both Nadja and thisquietarmy.
All in all this is a very good thisquietarmy album, and definitely worth seeing played out live. Anyone who is into psychedelia influenced black metal or Nadja'esque drones, then this is an album worth checking out for sure.
