Cough - Sigillum Luciferi

Cough are a no-nonsense stoner doom/sludge metal band from Richmond Virginia. They have released a series of great stoner doom/sludge albums through the years. Some of them dwelling in an Electric Wizard-like area, while some of them moving more towards a Thou like sludge. Albeit perhaps more melodic in the before mentioned EW and southern metal sense. Their first full-length album Sigillum Luciferi remains as their best album though. Despite the more Electric Wizard'like later albums such as Ritual Abuse.

Sigillum Luciferi manages to put forth five no-nonsense heavy and sludgy stoner doom tracks. The album is pretty good from start to finish, but the best tracks for me are the over 10 minute long Killing Fields and Hole In The Infinite. Both of them managing to produce some fine sludge riffage along with some more melodic yet heavy psychedelia filled parts, with the Killing Fields especially being one god damn massive as hell of a track. Northern Plague and Shallow Grave are almost equal to the previous two and offer some fine heavy sludge riffage. And what is especially good about Sigillum Luciferi in general, is that the no-nonsense stoner metal/sludge/doom heavyness manages to be pretty catchy in parts, which makes the tracks rather memorable in the midst of a wide range of mediocre and boring sludge/stoner bands out there.

Sigillum Luciferi is a great album for those of you who are into Electric Wizard, Weedeater, Eyehategod and Thou, as all of these marvellous bands seem to come into one when this Richmond outfit is concerned.
