Zoroaster - Matador

Zoroaster is a well-known and renowned American stoner doom/stoner metal band, who have released a number of fine sludgy stoner doom albums through the years. One of their best albums is undoubtedly Matador, which tends to move more towards the realm of psychedelia and psychedelic rock, as it still revolves around a rough stoner doom and sludge core. The core which came best apparent on their album Dog Magic, with songs like Brazen Bull, and on the album Voice of Saturn with a truly massive track titled Undying.

Matador seems to be a bit more refined though, with some clear cut flirtations with psychedelic rock. This comes best apparent in tracks like Old World, Black Hole or D.N.R. All of which pack some fine psych with a clear stoner doom and sludge feel to it. What is good about Matador in general, is that it is really hard to bring out the best songs on this release, as the album is highly consistent and packed with unrelentingly heavy yet psychedelic marbles from start to finish. No matter if you listen to Firewater, Odyssey or Ancient Ones. All of them are truly awesome. Offering some fine stoner metal heavyness that dwells enough in catchy yet heavy riffage while still having good amounts of variation to it.

All in all Matador is one of my favorite sludge/stoner doom/psych albums of all time, as Zoroaster also are one of my all-time favorite bands. It doesn't really matter if I would review Dog Magic, Voice of Saturn or Matador. They are all almost equally great albums in their own particular genre.
