Eagle Twin - The Unkindness of Crows

Eagle Twin are a great sludge metal/stoner metal/doom duo from Salt Lake City in Utah. Their best album to date has probably been The Unkindness of Crows, which they released back in 2009, and which still remains as one of the best sludge/stoner metal/doom albums for me. The vibe throughout this album reminds the well-known Baton Rouge sludge metal band Thou in many ways, as do Eagle Twin's later albums. Or should I say Thou reminds that of Eagle Twin. Either way these two bands dwell in the right side of sludge. The one that sounds interesting and is worth listening to, unlike a multitude or really boring stuff that is out there. The vocal department of Eagle Twin also have an Om or Sleep feel to it in parts. Which again is a great thing. One would just need to listen to Crow Hymn to understand this parallel well.

The best tracks on this great album are 10,000 Birds of Black Hot Fire, Crow Hymn, Storytelling of Ravens and Carry On, King Of Carrion, although it is really hard to find a track that isn't good on this particular great sludge metal release. All of these tracks have the Eagle Twin's signature slow heavyness to them, while tracks like Carry On, King Of Carrion or Crow Hymn even manage to be catchy in a raw sludge and stoner metal sense. Which is a welcome thing for me. The keywords with this album are slow no-nonsense sludge and stoner metal heavyness, with plenty of feedback and low end. This band sounds extremely raw and heavy with only the help of drums and guitar, and lacking a bass player. The guitar more than often actually sounds like a bass. Perhaps reminiscent of many bass and drum sludge and stoner doom duos.

All in all this album remains as one of the best sludge or stoner doom/metal releases in my books. Same can essentially be said of Eagle Twin's later albums like The Feather Tipped The Serpent's Scale from 2012. Be sure to check this doom duo out.
