Oranssi Pazuzu are a renowned Finnish psychedelic black metal band, who are about to come out with a great new album titled Värähtelijä. As has been the case with their earlier albums, this new album manages to successfully mix the genres of psychedelic rock and krautrock, with that of black metal and perhaps sludge. Although Oranssi Pazuzu have released a number of great albums through the years, then perhaps their best album to date is Valonielu, which they released back in 2013. There aren't really that many bands that try to mix psychedelic rock with black metal these days, and alongside Aluk Todolo, Oranssi Pazuzu are one of the more remarkable acts trying to do this.
The approach of Oranssi Pazuzu is somewhat different from that of Aluk Todolo though, as they do have vocals. Vocals that in part remind black metal, but mostly dwell in the realm of sludge or perhaps progressive black metal and post metal. Either way they tend to work pretty well throughout all of Oranssi Pazuzu's albums to date. While the older albums of Oranssi Pazuzu were more heavy in a black metal, sludge and even stoner metal sense, then the new album Värähtelijä as much as I have heard tends to dwell more on the psychedelic and krautrock aspects of psychedelic black metal, and perhaps move towards earlier Aluk Todolo, while still being completely unique. It remains to be seen if this album will match the great 2013 album Valonielu, that is perhaps the best example of progressive or psychedelic black metal.
Of course Oranssi Pazuzu's earlier albums like Muukalainen Puhu and Kosmonument are also albums in high regard and definitely worth a listen. Be sure to check out this more unique black metal marble from Finland.
