Rapper Kendrick Lamar won Best Video of the Year on Sunday thanks to his single "Humble" at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles.

The Angelino artist, who competed in eight categories, won a total of six awards, including Best Hip-Hop video and Best Direction.

In the video, Lamar - one of the most acclaimed rappers of his time - appears dressed as the Pope and as Jesus Christ during the so-called "Last Supper".

The song appears on the last album, "DAMN.", In which it returns to a more traditional hip-hop after its experimentation with jazz in "To Pimp a Butterfly".

Originally from Compton, in southern Los Angeles, Lamar opened the gala at Inglewood Stadium playing "Humble" dressed in red on a black stage illuminated by laser lights.

The Song of the Year award went to Lil Uzi Vert for "XO Tour Llif3" and Ed Sheeran was the Best Artist of the Year.

They also received Twenty One Pilots, Kanye West, Khalid, Zayn in collaboration with Taylor Swift, and Zedd and Alessia Cara.

The awards began with a marked political tone, when Katy Perry, the ceremonial teacher, showed a newspaper announcing that "the world is on fire" and Paris Jackson called to resist the neo-Nazis.

"The world is going well, is not it?" "It's all good, maybe not so much," Perry said after descending from the stage ceiling in a space suit.

Meanwhile Paris Jackson, daughter of the late pop king Michael Jackson, granted the first prize of the night, the best pop video of the year, to the group Fifth Harmony.

"We must show these Nazis and white supremacists that we have no tolerance for their hatred or discrimination, we must resist," he told the audience.
