There was no one on the stage who danced like Ian Curtis. Perhaps his influences were Mick Jagger and Iggy Pop but the passion and cruelty with which Curtis did it has not done anyone. He fed on poetry by composing his songs and poetry was what he expressed on stage.
Joy Division can be for many the best post-punk band of all time thanks to the talent of Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris. They invented that new sound. Formed in 1976 in Salford, Manchester, they managed to revolutionize music with their songs and melodies depressive, desperate and full of melancholy and poetry before the misery of life and the world.
Thanks to Tony Wilson and his label Factory Records they recorded their first and only disc as a band: "Unknown Pleasures". After Curtis' death in 1980 they posthumously launched "Closer". "Ian created a wonderful testimonial about how he felt at the time: apprehensive, fearful, but powerful," Hook commented on 'Closer', Joy Division's second and final album.
On May 18, 37 years of the unexpected suicide of Ian Curtis. The singer and leader of the band, suffered from depressive attacks, epilepsy and agorafibia. During live performances he suffered several attacks of epilepsy while singing, which forced to suspend the concert and to leave a climate of uncertainty in the future of the band.
One day before touring the United States, he committed suicide by hanging in the kitchen of his house while listening to the album "The Idiot" by Iggy Pop. There were a lot of personal problems with his wife and all the diseases he suffered. During the recordings of his second album, Curtis had already tried to commit suicide twice. The first was taking an overdose of Phenobarbital, a remedy to control the seizures. When he died, he was barely 23 years old.
To his group companions he met them at a Sex Pistol concert and from there they revolutionized music. Not only with Joy Division, but after the death of Curtis, the members took a step forward and created New Order.
Recently, on May 18, when 37-year-old Ian Curtis's suicide hit, the lead singer of the band Soundgarden, Chris Cornell committed suicide in a hotel room while on tour with the band. Joy division Influenced bands like Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Soundgarden, Nirvana and surely all the bands that make alternative music.
