Cuban rumba and Dominican merengue are World Heritage Sites

Two Latin American musical genres were proclaimed by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Cuban rumba and Dominican merengue were raised with this, with an announcement Wednesday during the days of annual meetings of the committee.

Cuban rumba is "an expression of a spirit of resistance and self-esteem as well as an instrument of sociability that enriches the lives of the communities that practice it," said the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in a release.
