I have to be honest. I would not have seen this video if it weren't for me having a non inspirational moment combined with a blog deadline. It's just not often that I listen to songs I can't understand. I think it goes without saying, as a writer, that I am very focused on stories, lyrics etc. So when a foreign language comes in, I feel I'm missing something major.
Even though I'd seen this track "Chantaje", by Shakira featuring Maluma show up a couple of times. It already had hit number one on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs, but still I never clicked it before. Until today.
I actually don't I have really been missing anything major with this song before clicking it. It's just your average pop song. Catchy and lots of auto-tune, which even I could potentially learn to sing along with.
Recently, the video was also released and that, too, is a regular pop video. The main thing that triggered me to watch it is Shakira.
I was thinking I hadn't heard anything from her since her song and role in Zootopia. I even blogged about it then as it looked like her grand return. Commercials started to appear on TV of her selling everything and anything (or was that just in Europe?), but then she got pregnant and took a well deserved break (while the commercials cleverly kept her under our attention).
Now she's back at it. The Latin market is huge and growing, so even though my instinct is to wonder why she wouldn't come back with an English song, I know this is not a bad move at all. She is one of the biggest artist of Latin music and it's good to return to your roots.
Her roots are also visible in the bathroom scene of the video, in which she shows of her dance moves, including the famous belly dancing moves that partially contributed to her cross over. She's definitely back in shape and has also surrounded herself with a great team in fashion.
If it weren't for the safety belts (by lack of a better description) on her hot pants, I wouldn't have clicked the video - I thought it was a clever detail to add.
The video shows her and Maluma at a club sharing some major flirtation. Shakira then ends the video looking somewhat like a mermaid, as she lies on a couch with golden glitter leggings and having water poured at her, while looking very serious. Yep, she's the average mom of 2.
