Floating Points is the brainchild of English neuroscience and electronic musician, Sam Shepard. He derived the name from computer programming lingo, which literally means a type of numerical data that computers store. Floating Points is an appropriate name that best describes Shepard's new genre of jazz.

The musical style is a new genre of experimental-electronic Jazz, "Future Jazz". The instrumentation is unique as Shepard utilizes both traditional jazz instrumentation enhanced with non traditional electronic sounds and instruments throwing in a scientific twist. He reveals his intellectual side and passion for electronics and science as evident with the backdrop to his music videosand live performances utilizing an Oscilloscope as the band performs.

Floating Points  most recent album was designed by Shepard swinging a light on a pedulum as his music is played trhough an LED, allowing the pendulum to sway with the light over photo paper.

The song  Silhouettes, is an ideal example of Sam Shepard's unique style incorporating traditional jazz forms and morphing the genre into this "Future Jazz" sound.

Sam Shepard has previously performed with a 16 piece live incarnation of Floating Points, entitled The Floating Points Ensemble.

Shepard released Floating Points debut studio album, entitled Elaenia in November of 2015 to worldwide acclaim with his music is extremely popular on the college radio circuit throughout the United States.
