The jazz rebel of the Estefan family

If you’re the daughter of Gloria and Emilio Estefan, it’s not all that strange that you would start a music career of your own. It’s in your roots. It could very well be the only world you know.

Emily Estefan has been making a name for herself for about a year or two now and has started pretty high on the ladder with some very impressive performances as her stepping stone. That, and the support of her parents, as well as the power of the Estefan name, already laid the foundation of big things to come. In fact, I mentioned her in one of my very first Kurrent Music blogs when Gloria was my main subject. Now, the new generation is taking over. Emily has released a new single that has got people blogging.

“Reigns (Every Night)” caught the attention of the online media due to the video. It shows a bit of a dark side, a bit of an edge. One you wouldn’t expect when you know a little bit about Gloria and Emilio. It’s out of character and therefore, interesting.

Even that aside, it’s actually always interesting to watch the next generation of a major celebrity. You can’t help but compare and look for a little bit of a continuation of the family legacy and every one of these offspring is always trying hard to create their own unique artistry and identity.

Nowadays, I think there's a generation of music fans out there, who’ve completely missed how big Gloria Estefan was. She was the first one to bring Latin influences into mainstream pop music. In fact, The Netherlands has always had a strange connection with her, because it was one of the first (for her) ‘foreign’ countries to catch on to her.

Even though Gloria’s remained active as an artist, most people now know her as the powerhouse writer and artist developer who's given Shakira, Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin a bigger platform. So, as said before, Emily couldn't have a better start with the backing of someone like that.

And when watching Emily’s video for “Reigns (Every Night)”, I see the strong Estefan jawline and some other external features that remind me of her mother, but Emily has definitely chosen a path of her own, musically.

It sounds like she’s getting her inspiration from soul, r&b and jazz, perhaps even some hip hop. This connection gets confirmed by checking out some of her videos of YouTube. For instance, I can highly recommend her jazzy version of Jennifer Lopez’s “Love Don't Cost A Thing”. I never thought it could sound like that.

“Reigns” is her third official single. However, you can find a few more songs, covers and acoustic versions when you look for her on YouTube. The video for the song shows a lot of her usual spunk. Emily is a bit of rebel, you see. The song has a really nice groove to it, but I don’t think you’ll hear it on the radio anytime soon. In that regards, she’s a real independent artist who will get an audience of her own.
