I am so happy that I am alive in the time when so much good music is produced. I don’t know how would I obvercome my struggles If it wasn’t for this art medicine. Central theme of Beat The Champ, the previous album by The Mountain Goats, was revolving around professional wrestling, but also everyday fight with the life problems and misfortunes every individual has to face. Personal conflicts stood out as a major topic. This incredibly conceptual album from 2015 earned its spot on my list of the best releases of the year. As it turns out, their 16th record will do just the same.

The Goth is remarkable. John Darnielle and the crew dedicated twelve new songs to Goth scene from the 90s of the past century. An introspective story about not belonging and fake desire to fit in permeates the whole album. Brilliance of the album hides in the band’s ability not to fall in the trap of copying those whore are their direct inspiration. Although Andre Eldritch and The Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Robert Smith and Gene Loves Jezebel are alive in spirit on the album, you will never point your finger at any song and claim it could be placed somewhere else.

What can be noticed from the very first listen is that album contains no guitars, ergo John’s piano and beautiful blown instrumental arrangements have a leading role. On the other hand, rhythm section with Peter Hughes on the bass and Jon Wurster on percussions shine through whenever they have a chance. Goth offers few phenomenal moments. First of all, nostalgic numbers in indie folk fashion such as Rain in Soho, Andre Eldritch Is Moving Back To Leeds and We Do It Different On The West Coast deliver top-notch rhythm sections, maybe one of the best ever heard. Songs Unicorn Tolerance, Wear Black and Rage Of Travers obtain complex melodies while moving from alternative rock to smooth jazz.

When it comes to lyrics, I am only going to say that Darnielle confirms his credibility as one of the most prominent indie authors of today. Humor, irony and wisdom are definitely not lacking here. So, what are you waiting for? Be a mountain goat and climb to your streaming services. A masterpiece is calling you from the peak of the sonic mountain.
