It’s been three years since the last album by Canadian indie rock group The New Pornographers. In this period, the members either focused on their solo projects or they went on vacation. Now they are back with seventh studio release that is on the trace of its predecessor Bill Bruisers, which means that it’s bursting from exuberant and playful indie tunes. Truth to be told, there are significantly more synth solutions than before.
The reason for more electronic vibe is that the drummer Kurt Bahle left the band and was replaced by Joe Seiders, a guy who is leaning towards electronic sound of percussions. Another leave is omnipresent – Dan Bajar, alpha et omega of Destroyer, whose delicate vocal and guitar skill would make this album even better. This time, A.C.Newman decided to accentuate synth sound, which is why Whiteout Conditions extremely resembles new wave\post-punk bands from the 80s. The dance potential is even bigger here.
What is characteristic for The New Pornographers throughout their career are intelligent, witty and complex lyrics written by Newman. Idiosyncratic lyrical style is strong on their seventh record as well. During album recording, the frontman has been going through a dark period in which he was struggling with depression. His state of mind is best reflected in the chorus of the title track.
Only want to get to work
But every morning I’m too sick to drive
Suffering whiteout conditions
Forget the mission
Just get out alive
These lyrics sound remarkable due to the fact that they are enriched with female vocals. And while we’re at female vocals, it is necessary to say that strong vocal of Neko Case makes unavoidable part of this collective’s charm. By being totally aware of her abilities, she delivers some of the best moments in the band’s career, such as This Is The World Of The Theatre. In my humble opinion, this is the best song on the album. Alongside Neko Case is Kathryn Calder, a singer who does not miss a chance to shine.
Overall, Whiteout Conditions is another solid album of The New Pornographers, a company that still stands strong and feels fresh after 18 years of career.
