Ok, sometimes you have to eat your own words. Its a hard thing to do, but if has to, it has to. Reviewing the Curse of Lono EP last week, I was quite critical of the format, characterising it as “something in between”, not a single, not an album, not even a mini one. Yet, her I am, reviewing another EP, that is practically of the same genre as the Curse of Lono one. But, it is yet another good one, and it is even a few minutes longer. That should make things even better.
As most of you have probably guessed, the band’s name is a give away. These five guys from Denver, Colorado do take their cue time-wise (and otherwise) from the soundtrack and the music of the times when that Dennis Hopper classic was made. The Byrds, Love, Buffalo Springfield and all those great California (particularly LA) sounds made at the turn of the Sixties into the Seventies.
What makes Last of the Easy Riders sound great (and promising), is the facts that they have listened well to their inspirations, not trying to copy directly any melodies or licks, but have absorbed them thoroughly and have produced something that does sound as their own music. Being inspired is by no means a bad things as long as that inspiration produces something that is meaningful and sounds good.
But then, again, the EP problem jumps out again. Just as you get pumped up, it practically ends. Last of the Easy Riders do have an album ready for the first part of 2017. I think it is something to get excited about.
