Daughter have released a new album that I still didn’t have the chance to listen, so I have decided to remind us all about their spectacular debut. Maybe a broken heart is evidence you have one. That’s what I feel when I think about If You Leave. Elena Tonra is a girl with guitar in her hands and pen in her heart who met two boys with guitars – Remi Aguilella and Igor Haefeli – and decided to form a band called Daughter.
Their debut album If You Leave was centered around one thing only – broken heart. The idea that the heart could stay broken is what they are obsessing about. Most of the songs are in the atmosphere that almost has no oxygen. Beautiful album opener – Winter – is saturated with whispers and is moving from mild rises to strong falls. Sounds like winter to me. The first single from this album was Smoother and it only continued the atmosphere of the first track. Elena and her guitar invite us to the low frequencies where the air is thicker, and the heart suffers.
Their hibernation can build a nation. Waking up occurs now and then via drums. Examples and Youth and Human that have a little bit of uplifting touch. The same could be told of the song Still, but most of the album is a spiral galaxy that makes you spin in nostalgia and pain.
I sometime wish I’d stayed inside my mother was my favorite line from the whole record. Ray of light appears at the end of the album with verse Love hunt me down I can’t stand to be so dead behind the eyes and feed me, spark me up.
Those who believe in love and those who believe in eternal sadness after the love is gone are the same people who are going to love Daughter. They are in so much pain, and so are you when you listen to If You Leave. Sadness is final and broken heart is ephemeral, but this album is forever. Can’t wait to listen to the one. Review is coming soon.
