Chicago rapper KAMI appears to be poised for solo success after breaking away from the SaveMoney collective (which also consists of Vic Mensa, Joey Purp, Towkio) with the release of "Scene Girl" - which provides a fresh sonic take on the familiar theme of late night partying via a heady infusion of noir-ish pop influences:
'Thanks for letting me know
Just who you was babe
You was looking too good
You started acting ugly
This here this here just like the movies
So we cast a star, some extras, some groupies
Don’t ya wanna show me
I read between lines I could tell what ya based on truly
Don’t ya wanna shoot me
But that drama and that action just like the movies'
With its irresistibly fast-paced beats and explorations of the darker side of urban nightlife, "Scene Girl" comes accross as a cousin of Neon Indian's "Slumlord Rising". The accompanying music video, which was directed by Andre Muir, backs up the track's noir fatalism with cinematic '80s-inspired visuals (the video opens with a neon sign that states 'just like the movies'). KAMI wanders through the city at night, narrating the actions and thoughts of the various scene girls he encounters - and walking off nonchalantly when one of them emerges from a nightclub with a fatal stab wound.
