Currently, many sports fans are enjoying the 50th Olympics edition. Even though the event has just started, it sounds like a lot has already happened. Yes, you’ve sensed it correctly, I’m not much of a sports fan, so I don't follow the Games at all. I look forward to hearing the wrap up on the news sometime during my day, but nevertheless, there’s one interesting side to the Olympics: The music that comes with it.Of course, I should be highlighting Katy Perry’s official Olympics anthem, “Rise”, for which she’s just released an official video a few days ago. The video is as grand as the song. The song already reminded me of a great soundtrack song for a movie. It’s got that kind of feel about it: It’s a statement, but it’s also slow and athletes need some action… so they have actually favored another song; one much older. With all the athletes being interviewed, currently, one song popped up all the time as the track most used during the hard training sessions: Eminem’s “Lose Yourself”. I can so understand why they would chose this song, while they were prepping for the games. It‘s got the exact mindset you need before the competition starts and it explains exactly that you need to believe in yourself. And no one could deliver that message better than Eminem.
But alongside of the Olympics themselves and the athletes involved, there are many other media companies wanting to attach music to this major sport event. In The Netherlands, the television station boardcasting the Olympics has also chosen a song to be their theme song. They have chosen Dotan’s “Shadow Wind”. Dotan is known for his vocal stacks, aka stacks of layers that make his music sound like chantsen, even a little bit like an all male choir. When you hear his music, you’ll probably agree, that it’s perfectly suited for mid-century war movies where knights on horses charge through deserts or highlands, so you can imagine it’s not that far-fetched to choose one of his songs for something like the Olympics. It's all about the fight. All songs have in common that they do represent the right feeling. Now, let’s hope for great results on the Games itself
