Malawian rapper Phyzix has been on the low for quite a while. His last album Follow the Leader came out in 2011. The emcee has been quiet all along until a couple of months ago when he released the Gamba Wa Suit LP. Many people thought the momentum but Mani Phyzo shows no signs of stopping. Over the past few weeks he has been releasing single after single in preparation for his upcoming 6th studio album, Captain Long John.
On the 30th of April the emcee released a love song titled Dekha. By no coincidence it was his wedding day too. A little over a week ago he went on a social campaign promoting his single Chimfana Cholusa (meaning ‘angry guy’) with a series of funny videos of him carrying a machete and making threats (in keeping with the theme of the song). The bass heavy, trap-oriented beat does well to convey the aggression in the lyrics.
Just yesterday (May 16th 2016) he released two more singles titled Baby Ya OldSkool and One Meets Two Part 2, the latter which features the Dare Devilz. From what has been released so far Phyzix hasn’t lost his touch. He’s still the same gamba people have come to know and love (some hate) ever since he released his hit single Cholapitsa.
Not much else is not known about the new album, but based on the material that has been released recently it will most likely be a very upbeat album with trap and passada influences; 2 genres which have taken center stage in Malawi urban music.
One can’t help but wonder whether Phyzix wife Ruth will also be featured on the album. After all she’s a brilliant singer who won the Malawi leg of the 2016 edition of Airtel Trace Music Stars – a pan African competition in which the overall winner will travel to Atlanta to record a song and music video with Keri Hilson among other prizes.
All in all the rapper hasn’t lost his touch on the mic. He still has the energy and nutty song concepts which he’s well known for. The complete tracklist is yet to be released, so it’s not known how many songs will be on the album. At the rate which singles are being released one is tempted to think there are 20 songs or there about. But we are yet to see. Hopefully it will be a low fat album with no filler content.
