Skepta Drops Old School Video for His New Single ‘Man’

With just a few days until UK grime artist Skepta’s album Konnichiwa drops, the artist has released a brand new video for the song Man. It’s a crazy video to say the very least. For starters it has a maximum resolution of 480p which is absurd in this day and age. But after watching the video it’s easy to understand why this creative decision was made. The video basically documents the on goings at a house party; a theme which has been explored by countless artists before.

What differentiates this from other videos is the sheer chaos that takes place throughout the 3 min 37 second video. It’s filled with drinking, smoking, dancing, and plenty of rowdy acts such as chasing the police, smashing up cars, and posting graffiti on cars and walls. It’s shot with handheld cameras so it has a real homemade feel to it. You forget that you’re watching a music video. We occasionally see stickers of the Konnichiwa album art posted on various surfaces acting as a promotional tool I suppose. It has a really old school feel to it.

Everyone in the video seems to be totally wasted or hung-up. If the scenes were taken from actual house parties then I can only imagine the chaos and debauchery that took place during those. It’s unlike anything I’ve seen in recent years. It’s rather sad in my opinion.

However, I applaud Skepta for trying something different. I cannot recall the last time I saw a video with a format similar to his. Over the past couple of years it’s become common to have simple homemade-style music videos but none are like Man. Trap and drill rappers such as Chief Keef, Lil Durk, Gucci Mane, Trinidad James and a few other mostly independent rap artists have had differing levels of success with these homemade-style videos.

Konnichiwa drops this coming Friday, 6th May 2016.  You can watch the video for Man below.
