Why the video of Erykah Badu’s surprise visit to a high school is double shocking
It’s easy to mistake Erykah Badu for a one hit wonder. If you´re not following the genre, you will mainly know her from her feministic “Tyrone”. Other songs like “Apple Tree”, “On & On” and her Drake cover “Hotline Bling”, that recently went trending on social media, should be enough to keep her musical legacy going. Her Baduism, so the speak.
Still, it’s fair to think that only an older generation of fans is keeping her music alive, so when visiting a high school in Newark, recently, she suggested to test out, whether the kids knew her too. And yes, yet again, you see what great classics can do for you. It can live on throughout generations.
The kids may have needed a moment to recognize her, but once they did, they knew exactly who she was and what she’s known for.
For most, the shock and the thriller was right there, so the video went buzzing around the Internet, but I was quite surprised with the beginning of the video. Did I just see that right? Is she a musician who not only packed her own lunch, brought it to work AND she’s eating healthy greens as well?! And she’s not even in LA, where you are known to live among health freaks? LOL!
Of course I’m just kidding, but it did strike me as pretty cool. This woman has always gone her own way and done her own thing. This makes her an interesting role model for the kids at the high school, btw, and I think she could’ve hung on to her “coolness” among the kids, if she hadn’t spoken out about the length of girls’ skirts a few days later.
On Twitter, she stated that skirts of teenaged girls could be a bit longer. Now, before you go off and start wondering what she’s on about, she does have a philosophy surrounding this, because it wouldn’t be Baduism without some life lessons.
She agreed to an article by basically saying that girls can wear anything, but also maturing girls also need to understand that they attract men and this could cause for situations they are not ready for. It’s all about the responsibility and maturity to wear those skirts.
