With multiple personalities, outrageous costumes, and edgier style, Minaj embarked in an industry mainly ran by male rappers. With controversial lyrics and collaboration with many famous artists like Rihanna, Beyoncé, Madonna and many more, she managed to crave her own distinguished style and definitely earn the title ‘’Queen of rap’’.
Though many people are not able to relate with her persona, Minaj for sure has enjoyed success in the past decade. Her early beginnings had hugely impacted her current status in the music industry. Starting from her roots as an underground rapper to her fame right now, Minaj has definitely grown both as a rapper and as a singer.
What made Nicki a star is her huge talent, her flow and her rapping. There is no doubt that this girl can rap. Having worked with rappers like Eminem, Drake, Lil Wayne, Tyga, just to name a few, Minaj secured her place head to head with the boys. Her collaboration on ‘’Monster’’ was the main turnaround point for her rapping carrier. Critics praised her vocals and lyrics saying that she is even better than the guys. Continuing the success of this track was followed by her album ‘’Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded’’ which was her second number one album. AMA, EMA and many more award shows entitled her album as the best album of the year. She also won the best Hip-Hop/RnB award for six continues year. The next step to her success is winning a Grammy, which she says will come in due time, as this is only her beginning.
Unlike her rapping skills, which are undeniably better than most of the men’s in the business today, Minaj’s singing has always brought controversy. Her high pitched vocals and auto tune usage really didn’t make people fall in love with her voice. Adding her quite unusual appearance completes the package, which made people think she is a bad role model and someone who is overrated for the talents she has. Racy covers, with almost no clothing, are not unusual for the star. Though, the male audience find this attractive, women on the other hand didn’t have high expectations for the rapper. But whether you agree or not sex sells these days. The music has been just a background to the image singers create for themselves. Singing qualities and versatility are long gone and more and more people only like or dislike music by how attractive one is.
People will always either love or hate Minaj. Her success and fame can only be admired by those who can’t embrace her talent. Her rapping is strong and her lyrics can be quite impressive, from time to time, but overall she is here for a reason. Whether it’s her famous posterior or her skills as a rapper, Minaj is here to stay, at least for few more years.
Take a listen to ''Monster'' and see for yourself how good or bad Minaj is. Enjoy!
