The criminally underrated Mac Miller released his third full length album titled GO:OD AM on September 18th, 2015. In addition to his 3 full length albums, Miller has released 11 mix-tapes all available for free online.
Heavily addressing his recent drug addiction, Mac Miller is back with a highly conceptual journey through his daily routines and the depths of his mind. As a long time fan, one of the things I love about Mac Miller is his artistry. He is a 23 year old, who has had mainstream success without a major label up until GO:OD AM. When artists sign with majors, they notoriously known to sell out. I’m happy to report the fact that this is not the case with GO:OD AM. Starting from the first track “Doors” into “Brand Name” you are hit with originality that can’t be reciprocated. With the liquid smooth sounds of the saxophone, and heavy hitting beats you know your in for an interesting ride through an alternative hip-hop album.
“We in between heaven and hell
F*ck your 9 to 5, I'd rather end up either dead or in jail
American ninja to these obstacles
No stoppin' me, we on the move
Your mouth runnin' like a prostitute's
Keep your head to yourself”
Lyrics from Brand Name
Overall, GO:OD AM is an alternative look into the world of hip hop. I feel like hip-hop has been changing the last few years. It is moving away from about rhyming how much money/cars/women you have and moving down a more artistic avenue. Look at similar artists like Chance the Rapper, Childish Gambino, Kid Cudi, Odd Future, Kendrick Lamar. Along with Mac I believe these guys are on the forefront of this movement. If you listen to their music its now starting to incorporate more real instruments into the production giving it a more real and organic sound. The guitar, saxophone, string, piano, and live drum work you hear on this album really shines through and gives it that true, laid-back feel. I trust that the listener will be greeted with an interesting look into the twisted mind of the games most talented 23 year old and won’t look past his first major label release.
