A strong song that says what the singer wants to say is what true artists search for. Most of the time if they cannot find it from a writer, they are compelled to will it into existence themselves. The industry of song is a never ending factory that never shuts down. There are only the inevitable shift changes, where artists come and go. What gets interesting though is when the shift changes happen within the artists themselves.
The multi entrepreneurial Darrell Kelley is an artist that is changing with every new release. On his new single “Unity” there are elements that appear simple when all examined. The slow staccato bass lines that are punctuating the drums are the foundation here. The percussion sounds as if it is designed to work as an S.O.S that brings focus to the message of this song. A throwback to the old tribal rituals of the talking drums. The talking drums were the rhythms that carried the message the tribes needed to hear. That message is UNITY, amongst the people he sees in his daily life. He exhorts the listener to love one another and not to embrace the hate and messages of violence and revolution.
He has strong views regarding the Second Amendment that can be debated at length with all sides engaging in hyperbole and folly. One thing is for certain. Shooting people in the streets as a way to express anger or selfishness is no answer to anyone’s problems. That is a universal truth regardless of anyone’s race, class gender or religion. The police have good and bad like any group of people. I think the main plea of Darrell Kelley is that he thinks the people and the police can do better. We cannot really argue that fact. Love, unity and acceptance is a beautiful message, but any side that says their ideas are the way it ought to be, seems to be forgetting about the individual’s freedoms.
The ideas of Kelley’s religion are rooted in the individual’s soul standing in front of God to be judged on the lives they have led. There is no way a planet of people will be able to stand untied in judgment. Especially when they cannot be united on the individual acts that happen in their lives. We need the people to be better at people control. That is where the unity of ideas and humanity will thrive. Darrell Kelley is a brave and committed man and artist. This Minister has strong ideas and a strong message. He is not afraid to say them in public and that will always bode well for the artist that is interested in a long term career. I think we can all find unity in listening to and enjoying the latest single from this hardworking artist.
