Ex Crystal Castles Member Strives Solo

There are some bands that mark certain era and that is crystally clear to all of us on kurrentmusic. Back in the day, when I was in between high school and university, there was this one band that totally caught me off guard and defined my fresh, hipsterish music taste. I remember I met with some people through last.fm based solely on our super high compatibility in adoring Crystal Castles. You remember that girl from Crystal Castles, the ultimate emo gay icon? Well, after her departure from the band due to fights with colleague Ethan Kath, the singer that performs under pseudonym Alice Glass has finally dropped his first solo material in a form of EP simply titled Alice Glass EP.

Based on her debut single Stillbirth (you won't find it on this release), we could have guessed in which direction is her music path going to go. Six new songs highly resembles her debut single. Ergo, it is an amalgam of industrial noise, energic and dynamic rhythms, and killer electronic beats. Alice screams over this sonic amalgam like someone is chasing her to take her life away. There is something super sexy in her vocal interpretation, no matter how auto-tuned it is.

My favorite track is the first single Without Love that confirms some earlier stories of her going through abuse in a relationship. Alice is blatantly candid when it comes to sharing her not so romantic experiences, and she is willing to confess she is a fool who would suffer because of love. Besides, the whole track can also be perceived through the prism of her past role in Crystal Castles, and verses Tell me what to spit, Don't tell me what to swallow is a direct reference to the closing track of the band's debut album.

Long story short - If you like what Purity Ring and Grimes do, then this is an EP for you. I hope this is just a warm-up for Alice's long awaited long play, because I have a feeling underground icon can easily rise to the top.
