An updated ode to the thong

In case you missed it: Sisqo unleashed the dragon in him one more time.

As a front man for Dru Hill, his blond hair made him stand out and it was only a matter of time before he would go solo. And from that point on, he became legendary for only one thing. He’s the guy who brought us the “Thong Song”. It’s the ultimate ode to that minimum amount of fabric that can hardly be called an item of clothing.

Even though the thong - as a fashion item - is timeless, the “Thong Song” is now mainly remembered by the people of my generation as a real r&b classic. But, let’s face it, a topic like that deserves to reach a new audience,  right?

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Sisqo had been asked to release remixes or even re-record the song to reach the new party crowd, but he’s always been reluctant to. With good reason. Why touch the song that was so big that it has become your legacy? Perhaps it’s all the comebacks from 90s r&b stars, perhaps it’s a mid-life crises, but Sisqo has now not only allowed a brand new house remix to see a release, he’s even featuring in the video.

I had heard remixes of the song before, but have always had problems with any other sound than the original. Even though, I like aspects of the ideas used in the JCY version, I just don’t feel like it’s really coming together. In the chorus, it really feels like they are almost on to something, but the energy that the original version had, feels a little bit deflated in the version.

I’m not the only who’s not really sure about the remix, but I really can’t say that I agree with all the negative reviews that it’s been getting from r&b fans and bloggers. I seriously think some of the ideas are nice; not weird, not bad, just not as good as the original. It just needed a beat to it, perhaps. Altogether, I’m not against the idea of Sisqo playing around with the song to find a sound that fits in with today’s club scene.

What does amaze me, is that Sisqo doesn’t really look like he aged in the new video. He’s not changed much and even his blond hair is back, as well as some of the Dru Hill like dance routines. If only someone would put the old song over the new video and I think he would reach today’s youngsters too…
