Mysterious Energy

Little is presently known about London duo Gold Fir, who have only revealed their first names (James and Mabel) and the fact they are long-time friends. The air of mystery surrounding their origins and backstory nevertheless suits their polished debut single "Night Walk": a sophisticated blend of '80s-inspired soul, funk and electronic music that puts a fresh spin on the energetic thrills of the nighttime.

In an interview with i-D magazine, the duo note that their distinctive stage name "can mean many different things, to us it can be fun, funky, sassy, serious, sad and amusing"; this multiplicity of affect certainly lends some welcomed novelty to well-trodden lyrical territory ('Where you go in the night?/ Just give it to me!') about living for what happens after nightfall. Mabel's distinctive vocal performance, which combines sass and a sense of worldly intrigue, works wonders with the duo's eclectic and momentum-driven production.

The video is accompanied by a music video courtesy of London-based animator and director Jack Brown, whose 2D hand-drawn animations move adroitly to the song's beats. The duo are presently working on more songs for the forthcoming EP, which will hopefully live up to (and possibly surpass) the strong potential of their debut track and their promising description of their aesthetic: "ever evolving, inclusive, whole-hearted grooves".
