Glitchy Minimalism

Song reviewed by:

"Lipstick Stains" is part of Minneapolis synthpop quartet Poliça's double A-side 7” release Lipstick Stains / Still Counts, which will be out on this year's Record Store Day. The product of a collaboration with German producer Boys Noize, it features glitchy techno effects that punctuate vocalist Channy Leaneagh's languid, gentle and slow-paced musings on an intimate encounter, 'foggy crystal balls', and 'twisted' names and numbers. Airy and minimalist, the track provides a contemplative juxtaposition between Leaneagh's intimate and melancholic vocals with a thumping, irregular bass - it's the kind of song that clears your head after midnight, when your head is alive with memories and the rest of the world's asleep.

The song is accompanied by a modern dance performance (which is reminiscent of the "Wandering Star" music video from Poliça' debut album) in a refurbished industrial setting:

"The video was shot in a small studio in northeast Minneapolis by director Adam Dunn using only his iPhone. I've always wanted to create a dance piece with my friend Nkechi Njaka – a choreographer and neuroscientist who has mentored me over the years in how to use meditation and movement as a live performer – and someone I really respect and am inspired by constantly. This was an opportunity to create movement with her in real time to a song that I care very much about."
