Electric Six Could Really Use Some Fresh Blood

It seemed like Bitch, Don’t Let Me Die is the last album by Electric Six, but it’s not. New autumn and new album. Fresh Blood For Tired Vampires is 12th record in their discography, and I can say right away that it does not bring anything new whatsoever. In contrast to its predecessors, there is no contrast – it is still electro-rock soup that sometimes tastes good, and sometimes leaves a bad taste in your mouth. This time, it’s mostly the second situation.

When synths replace guitars, that is when we get plastic albums that lack the essence of Electric Six soul, so the music comes off as intrusive and aggressive. It is what happened here, on the record full of everything and empty of iconic energy lead by seductive guitar riffs that spoiled us at the beginning of the band’s career.

After the opening instrumental Acid Reducer comes a series of spectacular dance numbers that even Lady Gaga would not release, while Madonna might choose few due to the lack on inspiration. In such a chaos, it is difficult to pick a standout because the whole Fresh Blood for Tired Vampires sounds obsolete. Even after several plays, my heart did not stick to any of these tracks.

Still, I managed to find two pearls. When they tone down and add a memorable chorus, then we get a song such as I’ll Be In Touch, which might be the only one worth repeating. Right next to it is Lottery Reptiles, which resembles some of the band’s most glorious moments. So, these two are the only songs worthy of your time.

As the album reaches its end, it becomes more torturing. Cacophony of synth-pop-rock-dance noises is combined with some yelling that is supposed to be taken as singing. Maybe I am being too candid here, but that’s the way it is.

Electric Six is a band who was always eclectic. Switzerland
