It’s not all that often that I let a famous artist direct my attention to the music they like, but when you have deadlines to meet, very little time, and in need of blog topics, you are vulnerable. So, when Adam Lambert shared on Instagram that he was totally into the new Goldfrapp album, I thought I’d give it a go. I’d been hearing about for a few days, but his post was the push to press play on “Silver Eye”.
I don’t know why, but I was expected something like LaRouge, but this is so much better. It’s not what you would probably expect me to like, but it’s electronic and it’s got pretty dreamy vocals, on some tracks. They might not be radio songs, but I love them for what they are.
The tracks never seem to go all out into an outburst of explosive energy, but they just take you places gradually, so they are not ever dull or monotone. No wonder various people had been blogging about this album and I think Adam Lambert had a good point with his post.
The diverse range of musical influences within Goldfrapp’s own music has always shown. I think the fairytale like “Moon In Your Mouth” has cinematic and even some Kate Bush influences, while “Anymore” is a little more catchy. The latter is also the lead single for the album, probably because of this.
It’s no wonder that some people are speaking of Goldfrapp as if they are the two masks you sometimes see to represent theatre. One happy, one sad. Though I’d probably not dare to describe their more serious side as sad. I’d say it’s dreamy and full of stories to listen to. It can hold influences of folk. The mix makes it exciting and interesting.
The duo has already been around for 17 years, so it’s not that surprising that they have perfected their sound to the T. The criticism on this album is mostly positive, with only some people complaining about the fact that the album might not hold any grand surprises. Oh well, If I were you I’d turn on “Silver Eye” and give it a try to. Judge it for yourself.
