Juno and Hanna are a Malaysian synth-pop duo that consist of siblings Hanif (production) and Hanna (vocals). With the release of "Air" last year (from their debut EP of the same name), they departed from their usual formula of having Hanna's delicate vocals taking center stage in the track. On "Air", her vocals are pitch shifted down via a vocal processor to sound more masculine and layered, achieving a resonant effect akin to a Gregorian chant. While the lyrics are hard to make out, they tell a melancholic story about lost love and the emotional upheaval that followed:
'Breezing through the night stay floating
What I presumed right stay solid
Assuming what you want in my mind
Convinced that I'm right still upraised
But the air weighs me down
But the air weighs me down
Weighs me down
But the air weighs me down'
Lyrics: Musixmatch
The GarageBand production has some of the same qualities you might expect from bedroom pop, but with a sense of lush airiness instead of cosy confinement. The track's bright melodies point to the wide open spaces that has now been opened for possibilities and experiences, standing in contrast to the languid and melancholic inertia in the song's lyrics. It's a confident and compelling track that inspires interest in what a fully-fledged LP from the young duo will have to offer.
