I never expected that my new favorite band would be from Spain. They are singing in Spanish, and I am not that fluent, but that still did not stop them from infecting me with their corky style and electro-disgusting (as they refer to it) music. Meet Las Bistecs, a foolish girls who may look like a dumb hipster chicks, but are actually socially aware and self-conscious human beings. Or dolphins, I am still not sure.
As a big fan of nonsense that makes more sense that what conventions order us to attach meaning to, it was a matter of minutes before I become a true fan of Las Bistecs. Their seductive single about the history of art titled HDA not only includes name dropping of Warhol, Goya and Picasso, but also shutouts to the three styles of architecture. The sound is electro-pop, but the exuberant feeling it provokes is everything but generic. If this didn’t tease you enough, just take a look at the video for this track.
I even used google.translate for some of the songs. It allowed me to understand that they sing about pussy-centralists and anti-democratic ladies in a brilliant Senoras Bien supported by an Absolutely Fabulous tribute video. In fact, these two Spanish ladies might be postmodern version of Edina and Patsy. I still didn’t convince you, right? You think this is just another pair of banal hipsters. Well, they were self-ironic about that in a song Sexy o No when singing tumblr o blog, tumblr o blog tu eres hipster y tu no.
Truth to be told, music landscape sometimes create a cacophony, but you were warned by themselves – they are electro-disgusting. Caminante might comprise of annoying dubstep section, but it samples the words from the famous 19th century Spanish poem. Universo might be noisy at times, but its hilarious lyrics make up for every second your ears felt uncomfortable. This is where the girls tell you to barf like Laika, the first dog sent to outer space.
My favorite is Problemas, due to its addictive melody and political statement. Cosas Negras is not far behind, as it explains four most important things every person must take when they are leaving their house. The opening track Galicia is the only ballade on the album, and it is just as ingenious as any upbeat shenanigans.
Whether you are a fan of Spanish music or not; whether you think this is just another electro-pop hipster dumpster; whether you are not into humorous music… it is impossible that you will not fall in love with Las Bistecs.
