SG Lewis is too big for Liverpool

After getting introduced to SG Lewis through Spotify, I really thought I was listening to a new r&b sensation. His songs sound laidback, even when they are up-tempo. They reminded me of artists like Usher, but in no way did I expect the songs to come from an upcoming club DJ. Of course, I should’ve realized there are many different types of clubs. Duh!

His name appeared to me after researching JP Cooper, for my blog about him last week. The two have paired up a few years ago for a track called “Shivers”, also pretty chilled-out. It’s funny, but that track didn’t even come up at first. It was hit new release, “Yours”, that sparked my interest.

It’s an intriguing track with sudden slurps and stops in the music, that makes you think something is going wrong with your streaming connection. At the same time, it’s all very subtle and easy to listen to. It’s a bit of a contradiction. I like contradictions. Hence, my sparked interest.

UK based SG Lewis has only been around for just a few years and is slowly building up a following for his music. Still, he ended up with the right team of people. In 2015, he got signed to PMR Records, home to Jessie Ware and Disclosure, who’ve connected him to a lot of people who are currently making waves of their own, like JP Cooper. It’s always good to be connected to the wave and I think it could very well become his time now.

Among his admirers are now also Disclosure, and that feeling appears to be mutual, and Pharrell Williams, who has spoken about his music on his own show.

In an interview, he has already spoken out on the fact that he’s not your average club DJ. His music doesn’t really lend itself for DJ sets, so he, too, says you could probably describe him better as an electronic music producer. Still, the dance scene keeps pulling. He has played on many festivals, like Choachella, and had his own set at the ever growing Amsterdam Dance Event, in  2016. In fact, his career also began as a resident DJ for Chibuku, a club in Liverpool.

“Yours” is the title track of his second EP and seems set to push his popularity even further. He’s able to cross over r&b and mellow dance, so 2017 might just be his year.
